Bob graduated from Victory High School, Clarksburg with the class of 1941. He moved to Baltimore, MD to work at the Glenn L. Martin Aircraft Plant. He advanced quickly and at the age of nineteen, he supervised seventeen other employees. Because Bob felt obligated to his country, he joined The U.S. Navy. He served as a navigator aboard the USS Deedee during World War II and was involved in most of the major invasions occurring in the South Pacific. After the war, Bob returned to Clarksburg and opened a gas station in Stealey, but was ruined by the flood of 1948 suffering the loss of twenty thousand gallons of gasoline.

Bob attended the First Christian Church in Parkersburg and after returning to Clarksburg, attended the Central Christian Church where he remained an active member. Bob felt it was not difficult becoming a Christian and for the past several years had taken the responsibility of keeping the United States flag flying from the corner of the church building. He purchased a new flag each time one was needed and made sure it was installed in honor of God and Country. Bob had been an active member of the alumni of Victory High School. He recalled the opportunity to shake hands with President George W. Bush and was present at personal appearances of President Truman, Nixon and Reagan.
